Appeal Made as Haiti Death Toll Rises

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 23, 2004 (Zenit.org).- Caritas Internationalis is launching a nearly $900,000 appeal to provide relief to Haiti, whose death toll rose to 1,100 in the wake of Tropical Storm Jeanne.

The storm followed quickly on the heels of other powerful hurricanes and tropical storms. The Associated Press was reporting that 1,250 people were still missing, days after Jeanne swept through.

The funds raised by Caritas will provide food and other relief items, such as kitchen utensils, sleeping bags, tents, medicine, chlorine, and clean drinking water to 2,000 families in three different parts of the country.

The hardest hit region is the city of Gonaives and the surrounding area, which was inundated by floods caused by the hurricane.

Caritas Internationalis is a confederation of 162 Catholic relief, development, and social service organizations worldwide.
