Belgian Bishops Backing a Pro-Family March

BRUSSELS, Belgium, SEPT. 6, 2005 (Zenit.org).- The Belgian bishops' conference is supporting a "Pro-Family March" this Saturday in Brussels, while the country's Parliament debates the adoption of children by homosexual couples.

"This march is the initiative of a group that makes no reference to any religious or political obedience," the episcopate said in a statement. "Its convocation is a reaction to the proposed law oriented to allowing adoption by homosexual couples."

The text notes that last May 31 the bishops' conference expressed its "profound concern in the face of this proposed law."

"We stress the importance of maintaining sexual difference as a fundamental point of reference of marriage and the family," affirms the bishops' text, published last Friday.

It added: "We invite the participants in the September 10 march to live this initiative as a peaceful gesture in favor of the family, one of the pillars of our society."
