Pro-life Leader Hails Supreme Court Ruling

WASHINGTON, D.C., FEB. 28, 2006 (Zenit.org).- The national director of Priests for Life congratulated Joseph Scheidler and the Pro-life Action League for their victory at the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of anti-abortion protests.

"For decades, in this case and many others, pro-choice groups have tried to paint us who oppose abortion as violent people," said Father Frank Pavone in a statement. "Today, yet again, that strategy fails."

The high court dealt a setback today to abortion clinics, ruling that federal extortion and racketeering laws cannot be used to ban pro-life demonstrations.

The 8-0 decision ends a case that the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had kept alive despite a 2003 ruling by the high court that lifted a nationwide injunction on anti-abortion groups led by Scheidler and others.

Father Pavone urged pro-life citizens to be more active than ever.

"The proper response to this ruling is to increase our peaceful, legal presence at killing centers everywhere, without fear of ridicule, false arrest, or persecution," he said. "Let's follow Joe Scheidler's example of persevering in protest of the greatest evil of our times, abortion."

Justice Samuel Alito did not participate in the decision.
