2 Franciscans Kidnapped in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, JULY 21, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Two Franciscans were kidnapped in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince Thursday, and are being held for ransom.

Father José Rodriguez Carballo, minister general of the Order of Friars Minor, has asked the kidnappers to respect the life of Brother César Humberto, and a young Haitian postulant, and to release them.

The amount of money demanded before freeing them has still not been made known.

The Friars Minor arrived on the island of Hispaniola (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic) in 1493.
