ROME, NOV. 29, 2006 (Zenit.org).- The Focolare Movement reported that the health of its founder and president, Chiara Lubich, is improving gradually.
"Hospitalized in Rome's Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic on Nov. 2 with respiratory problems caused by a lung infection, Chiara Lubich has left the intensive care unit," stated a communiqué sent to ZENIT.
On Nov. 21, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican secretary of state, visited the 86-year-old founder of the Focolarini in the hospital. Previously, Benedict XVI had expressed to Lubich his "human and spiritual" closeness and imparted his blessing.
The Focolare Movement said it has been receiving messages of "affection, solidarity and prayer for her cure from political personalities, the ecumenical world, Jewish friends and representatives of other religions."
The Italian-born Lubich founded the Focolare Movement -- "Mary's Work" -- in 1943 in her native city of Trent.
