VATICAN CITY, FEB. 11, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI praised Costa Rica for its initiatives to promote peace and human rights and, in particular, for its defense of human life.
The Pope made these comments Saturday, when receiving the letters of credence of the new ambassador of Costa Rican to the Holy See, Luis Paris Chavarri.
"Praiseworthy are the initiatives that the government of Costa Rica has carried out in the international realm to promote peace and human rights in the world," said the Holy Father.
He acknowledged, in particular, "the traditional closeness to positions held by the Holy See in various international forums on such important questions as the defense of human life and the promotion of marriage and the family."
In past years Costa Rica headed the International Convention Against the Reproductive Cloning of Human Beings, which had the support of the Holy See and numerous countries within the United Nations.
The Costa Rican Constitution, as well as the country's laws, guarantee all physical persons the right to life from the moment of conception until natural death.
