Egg Harvesting a Danger, Say U.S. Bishops

WASHINGTON, D.C., MARCH 9, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Harvesting eggs from a woman's body is a threat to her health and safety, according to the U.S. bishops' office for pro-life activities.

Deirdre McQuade, director of planning and information for the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities, made this comment Thursday in a statement that applauded a congressional briefing on the risks of egg harvesting entitled "Trading on the Female Body."

McQuade said in her statement: "This concern is timely in light of renewed efforts in Congress to fund destructive embryonic stem cell research in the name of pursuing cures."

She added that if "a treatment for a major disease ever were to arise from this approach," it would lead to "creating huge numbers of embryos (by IVF or cloning) solely for medical research."

"That means treating a great many women as egg factories, at great risk to their health and safety," McQuade said.

"Minority and impoverished women," she added, "would be particularly vulnerable to exploitation."
