VATICAN CITY, DEC. 20, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI blessed Mexico's offering to the Vatican's Christmas decorations: the Nativity scene in Paul VI Hall.
On Wednesday after the general audience, the Pope met with an entourage from Mexico led by Margarita Zavala, the country's first lady, wife of President Felipe Calderón. The Holy Father blessed the decorations for the Nativity scene, which includes traditional Mexican artwork.
The characters in the scene are represented by 11 hand-carved wooden sculptures. A 20-photo display documents the making of the work.
Mexican artwork also graces the Nativity scene in St. Peter's Square, which depicts a setting in St. Joseph's carpentry shop, rather than a traditional stable. Angels made by Mexican Agustín Parra will adorn the square's scene.
Mexico's participation in the Vatican's Christmas decoration celebrates the 15th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between that nation and the Holy See.
