NYERI, Kenya, APRIL 21, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI named Bishop Peter Kairo of Nakuru to take over the Archdiocese of Nyeri in central Kenya.
Archbishop Kairo, 66, thus fills the vacancy left by the death of Archbishop Nicodemus Kirima at the age of 71 last November.
His replacement in Nakuru was not yet named, making that diocese the third Kenyan diocese awaiting a bishop.
Peter Kairo was born on May 24, 1941, in Molo in Nakuru. He was ordained a priest on Nov. 1, 1970. He has a bachelor of arts degree from St. John Fischer College in Rochester, New York.
In 1983, he was appointed bishop of the new Diocese of Murang'a. He was moved back to Nakuru in 1997.
According to statistics from 2004, the Archdiocese of Nyeri, with a population of some 790,000, is 60% Catholic. Its 28 parishes are served by 104 priests: 100 diocesan and four religious.
