Gallup Bishop's Resignation Accepted

GALLUP, New Mexico, APRIL 30, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of Bishop Donald Pelotte, who has been on a medical leave of absence, from the pastoral care of the Diocese of Gallup.

The Pope accepted the resignation of the 63-year-old prelate in accordance with Canon 401.2 of the Code of Canon Law. Canon 401.2 relates to the resignation of a bishop due to ill health or another serious reason.

Bishop Pelotte has been on a medical leave since January.

Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix, who has been apostolic administrator of the Gallup Diocese, will remain in the Gallup post until Bishop Pelotte's successor is appointed and installed, the Associated Press reported.

Bishop Pelotte is a member of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament and has led the Gallup Diocese since 1990.
