Justice Council to Mark Rights-Declaration Birthday

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 13, 2008 (Zenit.org).- The Holy See will mark the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with a "study and reflection" event.

Cardinal Renato Martino, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, announced the Dec. 10 activity today in the Vatican.

The event will bring together religious and secular leaders, including the Pope's secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and Jaques Diouf, director-general of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.

It will also include a classical music concert.

Cardinal Martino affirmed that the event looks both to celebrate the U.N. declaration and to emphasize its "perennial value, reiterating its educative and guiding value in the construction of a more just and solidary world."

The prelate said the 1948 declaration was an important moment in the "maturing of humanity, of a moral awareness in accord with the dignity of the person."
