Comic Book Characters Present Aparecida Message

VATICAN CITY, JULY 15, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican official overseeing Latin America is offering lessons from the 2007 general conference of bishops in a medium everyone can appreciate: as a comic book.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, presented "¡Somos discípulos misioneros!" (We Are Missionary Disciples), as a tool for spreading the conclusions of the 5th General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean. Benedict XVI inaugurated that event near the shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil in May 2007.

The cardinal explained how the episcopal conferences of Latin American are "committed to bringing the people of God to know the text and spirit of the Aparecida document with simple language that is accessible to anyone."

The comic book is an illustrated synthesis of the conference conclusions. It is divided in three parts, with an introduction on the history and nature of the Aparecida event.

The pontifical commission generated the idea and it was made reality with the help of a group of Latin American priests, a theologian present at the conference, and a group of designers and specialists in caricatures.

Cardinal Re expressed his "recognition and gratitude" to all of them.
