AOSTA, Italy, JULY 17, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is healing after fracturing his wrist Thursday night due to a fall in his vacation chalet in the Italian Alps.
This morning, the Pope underwent surgery at the Umberto Parini hospital in Aosta, a Vatican communiqué reported.
Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office, stated that the Pontiff was still able to celebrate Mass and have breakfast early before arriving to the hospital at 9:45 a.m.
The spokesman added that the Holy Father "underwent an operation to realign the fractured fragments and fasten them through osteosynthesis, using a local anesthetic then applying a cast."
Benedict XVI's personal physician, Patrizio Polisca, reported that the Pope's general condition is good, and that he "will return shortly to his residence."
The Pope arrived Monday to Les Combes in the municipality of Introd, nestled in the Aosta Valley of northern Italy. He will remain at the chalet run by the Salesians until July 29.
