ROME, MAY 7, 2002 (Zenit.org).- A new institute in Rome will offer a specialized program in the history of theology.
The School of Theology of the Athenaeum of St. Anselm has founded the Mabillon Institute, which offer the program beginning in the academic year 2002-2003.
The institute is part of a tradition of studies connecting history and theology within the Benedictine order. The institute is named after Jean Mabillon (1632-1707), the French Benedictine of the Congregation of St. Maur, founder of Latin paleography and one of the pioneers of modern historical methodology.
The new program will offer the academic degrees of licentiate and doctorate. Courses will include historiography and the history of interpretation of the Scriptures.
The licentiate program takes two years (4 semesters). Doctoral studies require the licentiate, two additional courses, one seminar, and a major research project for a thesis, generally lasting two years.
