ROME, JAN. 23, 2003 (Zenit.org).- A mountain in the South Pole has been named officially after John Paul II.
The previously unnamed mountain, which is 1,110 meters high (3,600 feet), was climbed Monday by Monsignor Liberio Andreatta, administrator of the Roman Work for Pilgrimages. He took with him a cross on behalf of the Pope himself.
The expedition, which included Italian mountain climbers, celebrated Mass at the summit. Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi sent a message of congratulations.
