Church Leaders to Discuss Stability in Balkans


VIENNA, Austria, Mar. 7, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The presidents of the Catholic bishops´ conferences of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia will meet here next week to discuss the Church´s contribution toward reconciliation and stability after a decade of conflict in this region.

The meeting will be hosted by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn and co-organized by the Council of European Bishops´ Conferences (CCEE) and the Commission of the Bishops´ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE).

The aim is to identify the ways in which the Church can best contribute to establishing peace and prosperity throughout south Eastern Europe, and how it can reinforce this contribution through cooperation with Catholic organizations, other churches and religious communities, and the political institutions.

Representatives of Catholic organizations such as Caritas, Justice & Peace, Renovabis and the Sant´Egidio Community will be on hand for consultations.
