Bishop Appointed to Daegu, South Korea

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 5, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI appointed 14 new consultors for the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Sacraments.

A Vatican communiqué announced Wednesday the appointment of the following consultors:

— Monsignor Jose Aparecido Goncalves de Almeida, undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts
— Jesuit Father Dieter Bohler, professor at the Sankt-Georgen theological faculty in Frankfurt, Germany
— Father Nicola Bux of the Archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto, Italy, professor at the St. Nicholas Institute of Greek Byzantine Ecumenical-Patristic Theology
— Jesuit Father Joseph Carola, professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University
— Father Jose Manuel Garcia Cordeiro, rector of the Pontifical Portuguese College and professor at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Rome’s St. Anselm Pontifical Athenaeum

— Father Renato De Zan, professor at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Rome’s St. Anselm Pontifical Athenaeum
— Benedictine Father Cassian Folsom, prior of Noricia, Italy, and associate professor at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Rome’s St. Anselm Pontifical Athenaeum
— Father Marco Gagliardi, professor at Rome’s “Regina Apostolorum” Pontifical Athenaeum

South Korea

On Thursday the Vatican announced the Pontiff’s appointment of Bishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-Kil, 56, auxiliary and diocesan administrator of the Archdiocese of Daegu, South Korea, as archbishop of the same diocese.

Archbishop Hwan-Kil succeeds Archbishop John Choi Young-Su, who resigned Aug. 17, 2009, a couple of weeks before he passed away on Aug. 31 at the age of 67.

Thaddeus Cho Hwan-Kil was born in Hwa-Won, Korea, and was ordained a priest in 1981. In 2007 he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Daegu, and received his episcopal ordination that same year.

The Archdiocese of Daegu has some 442,794 Catholics, served by 382 priests and 1,187 religious.
