VATICAN CITY, DEC. 15, 2002 (Zenit.org).- At least 40 children have died of the cold weather in refugee camps near the Afghan-Pakistani border, reports L'Osservatore Romano.
Quoting humanitarian sources, the semiofficial Vatican newspaper today reported on conditions at the camps near Spin Boldak, seven kilometers (four miles) from the Afghan border.
"The dramatic conditions of life in these places have now been made unbearable because of an exceptional cold wave," the newspaper said. Temperatures have fallen to -15 C (5 F), it added.
