VATICAN CITY, JAN. 17, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican has convoked a conference in Asia to spread the social doctrine of the Church.
The initiative is being promoted by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences, and Thailand's episcopal conference.
Bangkok will host the Jan. 25-27 conference which will be opened by Cardinal Renato Martino, president of the dicastery.
In a communiqué announcing the event, the Pontifical council explains that Asia is seeking a balance that will ensure justice and peace for all.
According to the council, the Asian peoples are coping with "old and new forms of dehumanizing poverty and senseless violence, as well as with materialistic and hedonistic individualism, in the context of an emerging extraordinary economic growth."
"It is urgent for the Church in Asia to address these new challenges, drawing orientations and lines of action from the social doctrine of the Church," the council said.
The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church will be presented by scholars, experts and pastors.
For the presentation of the Compendium, special editions have been printed in various countries, including the Philippines and India. The bishops also confirmed that translations of the Compendium into more Asian languages are under way.
