SAN FRANCISCO, California, JULY 6, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI named Monsignor Robert McElroy of the San Francisco Archdiocese as an auxiliary bishop.
The Vatican announced today that bishop-elect McElroy, 56, will serve under Archbishop George Niederauer, 74, along with Auxiliary Bishop William Justice, 68.
The archbishop expressed his gratitude toward the Pope for the appointment, affirming, “We in this archdiocese are delighted that Monsignor McElroy’s gifts and zeal will be given even broader scope in serving the life of the Catholic Church and the community here.”
Bishop-elect McElroy has been serving as pastor of St. Gregory Church in San Mateo since 1996. He was born in San Francisco and ordained a priest for that diocese in 1980. His episcopal ordination is scheduled to take place Sept. 7.
The San Francisco Archdiocese has 437,000 Catholics, with 457 priests, 79 permanent deacons, and 931 religious.
Vatican appointments
Also today, Benedict XVI named several new members of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments.
These include: Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, archbishop of Bordeaux, France; Cardinal Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Mumbai, India; Archbishop Ioan Robu of Bucharest, Romania; and Archbishop Michael Neary of Tuam, Ireland.
The Pope also named as congregation members: Archbishop Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes; Archbishop Raymond Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature; Bishop Julián López Martín of Leon, Spain; and Bishop Aloysius Maryadi Sutrisnaatmaka of Palangkaraya, Indonesia.
