The Pope mentioned the world day, established by the World Health Organization, after praying the midday Regina Caeli with those gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

He spoke of blood donors as people “who in a silent way contribute to the help of brothers in difficulties.”

The theme for World Blood Donor Day 2011 is “More blood. More life.”

The World Health Organization reports that 92 million people worldwide donate blood each year.

“To all blood donors I address a cordial greeting,” the Holy Father said, “and invite young people to follow their example.”
