Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Archbishop Hieronymus Herculanus Bumbun, 76, and appointed Bishop Augustinius Agus, 64, to succeed him in leading the Archdiocese of Pontianak.
Bishop Agus comes from the Diocese of Sintang, Indonesia.
Pontianak is an archdiocese with some 570,000 Catholics in a population of 726,000. They are served by 90 priests and some 525 religious.
The Holy Father also appointed Fr. Antonius Subianto Bunyamin, 46, as bishop of Bandung, Indonesia.
Antonius Subianto Bunyamin was born in Bandung in 1968 and was ordained a priest in 1996. He is a member of the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross (OSC).
He holds a licentiate in philosophy from the Catholic University of Lovanio, Belgium, and a degree in philosophy from the Pontifical Lateran University, Rome. He has served in the following pastoral and academic roles: lecturer in philosophy at the Catholic University of Bandung; vice provincial O.S.C. of Bandung; executive director of the Holy Cross Foundation for Catholic school in Bandung; president of the managing board of the Parahyangan Foundation; secretary of the Marga Asah Talenta foundation, and president of the legal institute of Parahyangan University. He is currently provincial prior O.S.C. of Bandung.
Bandung is just southeast of the Indonesia capital of Jakarta. There are only about 90,000 Catholics in the diocese, which has a population of 29 million. They are served by about 100 priests and 145 religious.
Roman Catholics are a small minority (2.9%) in Indonesia, which is more than 87% Muslim.
