A long awaited memorandum of understanding between the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) and the African Union has been signed by the President of SECAM, Archbishop Gabriel Mbilingi and Dr. Aisha L. Abdulahi, African Union Political Affairs Commission Commissioner.

According to Mr. Berhanu Tamene, SECAM AU Liaison Officer, the MoU will allow the Catholic Church in Africa to further widen her social activities in the continent.

“The Church in Africa is serving the people with various Pastoral and Social services, this agreement will allow Bishop Conferences in Africa to further work closely with governments in Africa in bridging gaps in terms of participatory development and influencing national policies,” he said.

Mr. Berhanu further said that the signing of the agreement is not the final accomplishment therefore SECAM is designing ways for its implementation.

He explained “SECAM works through Justice and Peace Commissions and Parliamentary Liaison Offices of different Bishop Conferences in the continent. It is striving for the achievement of the 2063 African Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goal through Africans for Africa.”

He also expressed hope that all the Bishop Conferences in Africa will closely collaborate with SECAM and contribute to achieving these objectives in service of the people in Africa.
