The state legislature had approved the measure Tuesday, and the governor signaled his intentions the next day.

In a statement, the governor’s press secretary Margita Thompson invoked the voter approval in March 2000 of Proposition 22, which said: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

“We cannot have a system where the people vote and the Legislature derails that vote,” the statement said. “Out of respect for the will of the people, the Governor will veto AB 849.”

The California Supreme Court is likely to decide next year whether Proposition 22 and other state laws that define marriage are constitutional.
