Pope Francis received the Captains Regent of the Republic of San Marino, Giancarlo Terenzi and Guerrino Zanotti.

The Pope welcomed the heads of state of the microstate before speaking privately with them for a little over 20 minutes.

In a statement released by the Holy See Press Office, the Pope and the Captains Regent discussed “the active collaboration in the social field between public institutions and the Church.”

Following their private meeting, the Regents gave the Holy Father a silver chalice as a gift. In turn, the Pope gave each of them a medal of the Angel of Peace, tell them that he liked the image and its message of peace.

“We do need peace,” Terenzi said to the Pope. After bidding farewell to the Holy Father, the Regents met in private with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, along with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, secretary for Relations with States.
