After Cardinal Fernando Filoni, another cardinal is following suit and is set to go to Iraq. English Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, will be in Erbil this Saturday through Monday, April 11-13, to be with its refugees and to communicate the Catholic Church in England’s solidarity.

In a statement, the English Catholic Church explained that this initiative wants to be a sign of “solidarity with the tens of thousands of Christian refugees driven from their homes and off their land by ISIS last year from Mosul.”

According to the Italian religious news service SIR, Cardinal Nichols lamented on the situation of the refugees during his Easter Vigil homily, especially the extreme poverty those forced to flee their homes and now find themselves in northern Iraq are facing.

The cardinal is calling for their situation to be recognized and urging that more humanitarian aid is sent their way. Echoing the Pope’s call, Cardinal Nichols is exhorting governments to help those displaced and suffering.
