That will bring to 141 the number of languages that “God Speaks to His Children” is available. So far, the international Catholic charity has distributed 40.6 million copies of the work, in 115 countries.

The book, first published in Spanish in 1979, has become a key tool for pastoral work in many parishes and families.

The languages in which the Child’s Bible is being published for the first time this year are: Assamese, Kuki, Mizo, Nepali (all in India), Songje (in Congo) and Maya (in Mexico).

The latter is the language of a pre-Columbian civilization that dominated large parts of Central America during the Middle Ages. Today, Maya is still spoken by about 0.9% of Mexico’s 100 million inhabitants, mainly on the Yucatan peninsula and in the southernmost state of Chiapas.

The editions in Assamese, Kuki, Mizo and Nepali will be added to those already translated into other Indian languages and distributed in the country, among them Tamil.
