CALCUTTA, India, APR. 8, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Former U.S. President Bill Clinton visited the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, the institution founded by Mother Teresa.
The former president was received Saturday by Sister Nirmala, who succeeded the Albanian religious as head of the congregation.
Clinton laid a floral wreath on the tomb of the deceased Nobel Peace Prize recipient, and later went to the chapel to pray with some 100 nuns of the congregation, the national agency PTI reported.
Clinton was visiting India in the context of plans for reconstruction of the state of Gujarat, which was devastated by an earthquake Jan. 26. A study by Saurashtra University, published Friday, reveals that the quake killed close to 100,000 people -- far greater than the 20,005 reported by the government.
