The Pope stressed this today at his annual meeting with those who help him in his ministry, to express his Christmas greetings.
The Holy Father began by thanking his collaborators for their service. "How could I have carried out the task entrusted to me without your faithful collaboration?" he asked.
"The end for which we all work is one: to proclaim the Gospel of Christ for the salvation of the world. It is a mission we wish to carry out with a spirit of faith and with a willingness to sacrifice, if it were necessary, even to giving up of blood," he added.
"May faithfulness in our ministry never fail the One who has associated us profoundly with his priesthood!" John Paul II said. "May he alone, Christ, be always at the center of your lives!"
"With the passing of the years," he added, "the conviction is ever more profound in me that Jesus asks us to be his witnesses, that we be concerned only about his glory and the good of souls."
