Emeritus of Antigonish, Vatican II Participant, Dies

ANTIGONISH, Nova Scotia, DEC. 2, 2003 (Zenit.org).- Bishop Emeritus William Power of Antigonish, one of the last remaining prelates in Canada who took part as a bishop in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council, died Saturday. He was 88.

He served as bishop of Antigonish from 1960 until his retirement in 1986.

Born in Montreal on Sept. 27, 1915, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1941 after completing his theological training at the Grand Séminaire de Montréal. He served in many posts for the Archdiocese of Montreal including vice chancellor.

He served as president of Canadian bishops conference from 1971-73. In 1974, he represented the conference at the Synod of Bishops on evangelization, in Rome.
