European Union Seeks Public Input on Biotechnology

ROME, SEPT. 14, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The European Commission is preparing a policy paper for the Union on cloning, transgenic organisms and stem cells, among other issues, and it invites citizens to contribute their opinions.

By year-end, the European Commission intends to present a policy paper, contributing to the development of a strategic vision of life sciences and biotechnology up to 2010 and beyond.

For this purpose, the European Commission has called a stakeholder consultation meeting from Sept. 27-28, in Brussels, Belgium.

In order to prepare the document, the commission has just presented a consultation paper, requesting citizens to send their comments and contribution on the subject.

Citizens may read the text and make proposals at
(http://europa.eu.int/comm/biotechnology).

Comments may also be sent by e-mail to:
ec-biotechnology@cec.eu.int.

Or they can be faxed to: 32-2-295-76-37.

The commission´s Web page states: “All contributions and comments will be kept in mind when the final orientation document is written.”

Comments sent before Sept. 20 will also be taken into consideration in the consultation meeting with interested parties.
