Father Franco Cavarra of Melbourne will be the creative director for the production, a key event for the Youth Day celebrations.
Before his ordination in 1998, he was a free-lance stage director of opera and drama as well as a lecturer at the Victorian College of the Arts. He has directed opera locally and internationally, including productions at the Sydney Opera House.
The Youth Day coordinator, Auxiliary Bishop Anthony Fisher, told Brisbane's WestEnder online newspaper: "Father Cavarra will play a vital role in the design and execution of Stations of the Cross, one of the largest WYD '08 events.
"He brings to the World Youth Day his experience as a priest and his extensive training and skill in events and the arts. This combination will ensure the Stations of the Cross will be a truly memorable occasion for the youth of the world."
Father Cavarra said: "I believe that the way of the cross undertaken by Jesus can be an enduring and inspiring parable for the journey of life for many of us."
