On Saturday morning, the Holy Father met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.
According to a communique released by the Holy See, Pope Francis and Chancellor Merkel discussed several topics of mutual interest, especially the current socio-political, economic, and religious situation in Europe and the world.
“In particular,” the communique stated, “the protection of human rights, the persecution of Christians, religious freedom, and international collaboration for the promotion of peace were discussed.”
Before meeting with Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States, Chancellor Merkel exchanged views on Europe’s responsibilities in the world today.
The Holy See stated that the discussions expressed a “desire for all civil and religious elements to commit to a development founded upon the dignity of the person and inspired by principles of subsidiarity and solidarity.”
