“Even in culture and contemporary society, the love of God exists and is present, despite evil.” This was a statement made by Archbishop Joseph Coutts of Karachi, Palestine in a meeting on Lent held recently at the city’s catechetical centre in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, reported Fides.
Organized by the catechetical centre, the seminar has become a fixed appointment in which many faithful participate.
At the event, the archbishop stressed that Jesus Christ died for us so that we could live.
“Evil is defeated and God’s love triumphs,” he noted. “Even today, here in Pakistan.”
“Lent is a favorable moment to examine our relationship with God,” the archbishop repeated, especially “as we prepare ourselves for Easter.”
Archbishop Emeritus, Evarist Pinto, who attended, said Lent’s purpose is the renewal of the baptismal promises.
“All our Lenten activities,” he said, “should move us towards this goal: to prepare ourselves to reject Satan, all his works and all his empty promises; to carry out a profound act of faith in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
Through this gathering, Father Arthur Charles, the catechetical centre’s director, said, “we are invited to recognize much more intensely God’s great mercy and love.”
