ROME, JUNE 1, 2006 (Zenit.org).- The Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity is preparing a reference work for spiritual ecumenism, says its president, Cardinal Walter Kasper.
The cardinal made the announcement when opening the new Dehoniana Books store on the Via della Conciliazione, next to the Vatican.
ZENIT learned that the "Vademecum" is in Italian but is being translated into other languages and should be published within the next few months.
Sources said the document is designed to be an aid for implementing the principles already indicated in the "Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms on Ecumenism."
Cardinal Kasper, announcing the Vademecum, said: "We are at the beginning of a new ecumenism, profoundly connected to a new evangelization, which will not create a new Church, but a Church profoundly renewed spiritually, capable of surmounting the divisions of the past."
The cardinal added that while the theological dialogue continues at the international level -- the "official" ecumenism -- there is also a growing "spiritual ecumenical network, which is perhaps more important and promising than the other." In this context, he said, the Vademecum will be of key importance.
