The pills are being pushed by the Honduran Association for Family Planning and the Public Health Secretariat, in collaboration with Marie Stopes Honduras, an affiliate of Britain’s most prominent chain of abortion clinics.
“The scientific conclusions of genetics allow one to state that the life of a new being begins at the moment of fertilization,” says a statement signed Friday by Cardinal Oscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga, president of the bishops’ conference.
“Post-coital hormonal contraceptives, when they impede the implantation or nesting of the fertilized ovum, are clearly abortifacient,” the statement warns.
The text states that whoever is an “accomplice in promoting abortifacient methods” cannot be a living member of the Church, because such a person “is placed against the God of Life and, consequently, excludes himself from communion in the Body of Christ.”
“Let no Catholic doctor or nurse be an accomplice to this campaign of massive destruction of human lives,” the bishops exhort. This nation of 6.5 million is predominantly Catholic.
