In statements published Tuesday by the ANSA agency, Franco Frattini said the draft of the Constitutional Treaty “makes reference to many values and principles.”
He believes it is possible to reconcile the principle of separation of church and state, “which is one of the principles of democracy, with the values of Christianity, which represent a great patrimony of the history of humanity.”
“I think that both things can coexists very well,” Frattini said. He added that he is “neither optimistic nor pessimistic about the possibility of achieving consensus on the mention of Christianity in the future Magna Carta.”
Italy will assume the European Union’s rotating presidency next semester.
