ROME, JUNE 14, 2001 (Zenit.org).- A draft law proposes to give financial aid to women to encourage them not to have abortions.
The Christian Democratic Party, a member of Silvio Berlusconi´s Italian coalition government, presented the legislation Tuesday. The proposal, presented by seven CDU senators, would grant $423 a month for a year to women who decide not to abort.
Abortion is legal in Italy during the first three months of pregnancy.
"We wish to help [the woman] to assume the responsibility of becoming a mother," said CDU national secretary Rocco Buttiglione, who has just been appointed Minister of European Policies.
