It will be the first time in the history of the Church that a liturgical celebration with the Holy Father is filmed with this technology.
The recording will be done by Sony and the Vatican Television Center, which last November already took some shots with the three-dimensional system in a general audience in the Paul VI Hall.
The 3D filming of John Paul II's beatification will be undertaken using a new mobile platform system that the Vatican Television Center implemented recently, which was donated to the Pope by the Knights of Columbus.
This filming will serve as the basis for subsequent experiments with the view of eventually broadcasting live in 3D from the Vatican.
When the new equipment was presented last Nov. 16, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican Television Center, pointed out that "if we don't maintain an adequate level of quality and capacity, we'd be standing in the way of broadcasting images, and thus the Pope's message."
