The selection was made by European Voice, a weekly English-language newspaper published in Brussels and widely read in European Union institutions.

For the second time, it is organizing an awards ceremony entitled “EV50 — The Europeans of the Year.”

Fifty individuals have already been selected in 10 categories. Among the “European Campaigners of the Year” is the Pope, “for championing EU enlargement in his native Poland and for his plea to include Christian values — without excluding other traditions — in the Convention on the Future of Europe.”

The public can vote for their choice of “European of the Year” at www.ev50.com/noflash. The deadline for voting is Nov. 15.
