In a statement signed by Archbishop Joseph Mercieca of Malta, president of the episcopal conference, and two other prelates, the bishops agree with the Commission of the Episcopates of the European Community regarding the resolution adopted last week.

The Maltese bishops said abortion is an evil because “it strikes directly at the right to life of an innocent human person.”

The bishops emphasized that their position does not diminish “the Church’s full support of the fundamental human rights of women, including the right to live in dignity and security.”

The bishops consider the Parliament’s attempt to influence the policies of states “in an area that is not of its competence” as “deplorable and improper.”
