Missionaries of Charity to Mark First Year in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, SEPT. 3, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The Missionaries of Charity on Wednesday will mark their first anniversary of residence in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Their simple home, by the Jaffa Door near the headquarters of the Latin Patriarchate, houses four religious. Wednesday is also the fourth anniversary of the death of the nuns´ founder, Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

The Jerusalem community works closely with Missionary of Charity facilities in Nablus and Gaza, and with the “House of Peace” in Amman.

In addition to their intense prayer life, the 16 Missionaries of Charity working in the Holy Land are primarily committed to work with the physically and mentally handicapped. In Arab societies, the mentally handicapped are often considered a disgrace.
