Monastic Institute Marks 50 Years with a Conference

ROME, MAY 29, 2002 (Zenit.org).- The Monastic Institute, part of the School of Theology of the Athenaeum of St. Anselm, is holding a five-day conference this week on “Classic Texts and Themes of the Christian Monastic Tradition.”

The symposium marks the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the institute, established under the impetus of Abbot Primate Bernhard Kaelin. The intention was to create a center of studies that which would teach disciplines based on the historical-philological method.

The areas of research to be considered at the symposium include Eastern and Western patristic sources, the Rule of St. Benedict, monastic history, Oriental, Byzantine and pre-Benedictine texts and authors, medieval Western monasticism, and monastic theology, liturgy and spirituality. More than 50 speakers will present work carried out in recent decades.

A volume entitled “Schola Christi: 50 Years of the Monastic Institute of St. Anselm” will be presented. It is a collection of writings of 17 professors who have taught at the institute.
