The symposium marks the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the institute, established under the impetus of Abbot Primate Bernhard Kaelin. The intention was to create a center of studies that which would teach disciplines based on the historical-philological method.
The areas of research to be considered at the symposium include Eastern and Western patristic sources, the Rule of St. Benedict, monastic history, Oriental, Byzantine and pre-Benedictine texts and authors, medieval Western monasticism, and monastic theology, liturgy and spirituality. More than 50 speakers will present work carried out in recent decades.
A volume entitled “Schola Christi: 50 Years of the Monastic Institute of St. Anselm” will be presented. It is a collection of writings of 17 professors who have taught at the institute.
