The missionaries, also known as the Company of Mary, elected Father Santino Brembilla, 59, to a six-year term during their general chapter in Rome, reported the congregation’s provincial secretariat.

Santino Brembilla, born in Stezzano, was ordained a priest in 1971. After some years of ministry in Italy, in 1979 he went as a missionary to Peru, where he has carried out his service.

Addressing the members of the general chapter, the new superior highlighted “the need to receive life and the mission as a gift from God, responding with creativity to the challenges of our time.”

In carrying out his mission, Father Brembilla will be helped by four general assistants elected by the chapter: Olivier Maire, of France; Donald Lasalle of the United States; Joseph Philor of Haiti; and Mathieu Jenniskens of the Netherlands.

The Montfort Missionaries are celebrating the 300th anniversary of their foundation. The congregation has 950 religious working in 30 nations.
