SYDNEY, Australia, APRIL 20, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI appointed Father Peter Comensoli, professor of the Catholic Institute of Sydney, as auxiliary bishop of that archdiocese.
The Vatican announced today that Bishop-elect Comensoli, 47, will serve under Cardinal George Pell, archbishop of Sydney.
The bishop-designate has been working in the Diocese of Wollongong since his priestly ordination in 1992.
He has also been teaching at the institute since 2010, specializing in themes of moral theology and its philosophical and anthropological bases.
Cardinal Pell, upon hearing of the appointment, noted that Bishop-elect Comensoli “is young and energetic, and has an unusual blend of extensive pastoral experience and high academic achievement.”
“I hope he will be able to continue teaching at the Catholic Institute in Sydney,” the prelate added. “I am sure he will be warmly welcomed by the people of Sydney as they come to know him.”
The Sydney Archdiocese has 634,000 Catholics, 478 priests, five permanent deacons, and 1,583 religious.
Wales
On Tuesday, the Pope appointed Auxiliary Bishop George Stack of Westminster, as archbishop of Cardiff, Wales.
Archbishop Stack, 64, succeeds Archbishop Peter Smith, who was named archbishop of Southwark, England, on April 30, 2010.
Born in Cork, Ireland, George Stack was ordained a priest for the Westminster Archdiocese in 1972. He received his episcopal ordination in 2001.
The Cardiff Archdiocese has 144,960 Catholics, served by 94 priests, 16 permanent deacons, and 157 religious.
