VATICAN CITY, DEC. 19, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The saint who founded the Little House of Divine Providence, a refuge for the poor, was at the Vatican last weekend -- by way of a movie about his life shown at the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

"St. Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo" was presented in the cinema room of that Vatican dicastery Sunday. The movie, a miniseries designed for television, was produced by Italian public television and Nova-T, an Italian Capuchin center of multimedia production.

The movie is based on the life of St. Cottolengo (1786-1842), especially the founding of the Little House of Divine Providence, which still offers refuge to the poor from many countries.

The director of the movie is Paolo Damosso, who was present for the showing. It stars Italian actors Massimo Wertmüller, Massimo Bonetti and Claudia Koll.

The president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, Archbishop Claudio Celli, welcomed those present. Among them were Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, and Cardinal Francesco Marchisano, president of the Labor Office of the Apostolic See, as well as other members of the Roman Curia and religious from the group of brothers and sisters founded by St. Cottolengo.
