New Bishop Named for Amos, Quebec

AMOS, Quebec, MAY 3, 2004 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II has named Auxiliary Bishop Eugène Tremblay of Quebec City as bishop of Amos, in the same province.

He will succeed Bishop Gérard Drainville, 73, whose resignation has been accepted by the Pope. Bishop Drainville held his post for 25 years.

Eugène Tremblay was born in 1936 in Saint-Hilarion, in the region of Charlevoix, Quebec. He completed his theological studies at the Grand Séminaire in Quebec City. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1962 and to the episcopate in 1995.

He has been active with the Canadian bishops’ conference serving as a member of the Commission of Liturgy — French Sector. He co-presided over the special task force for the revision of “From Pain to Hope,” which addresses the issues of the Church and sexual abuse.

The Amos Diocese has a Catholic population of 95,030 in 60 parishes and missions, served by 23 diocesan priests, 18 religious order priests, 111 religious sisters and brothers and 52 lay pastoral assistants.
