New Costa Rican Ambassador Presents Credentials to Pope Francis

On Monday morning, Pope Francis met with Marco Vinicio Vargas Pereira, the new Costa Rican ambassador to the Holy See, as he presented his Letters of Credentials to the Holy Father.

The new Costa Rican ambassador has had an extensive diplomatic career, including having served in the United States in the early 1990s as Consul General in Pennsylvania.

Born in 1954, in Alajuela, Vargas graduated in Law from the University of Costa Rica and has studied International Relations and Diplomacy.

In addition, the new ambassador to the Holy See has held various diplomatic posts in Brazil, the United States, and the headquarters of the Costa Rican Foreign Ministry.

Moreover, he has taught in Costa Rica at the Foreign Service Institute Manuel Maria and at universities.

Ambassador Marco Vinicio Vargas Pereira succeeds Costa Rica’s former Ambassador to the Holy See, Fernando Felipe Sánchez Campos.
