Observer Named for Tourism Group

MADRID, Spain, DEC. 7, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI named Archbishop Manuel Monteiro de Castro, the apostolic nuncio in Spain, as permanent observer of the Holy See to the World Tourism Organization.

The Vatican announced the appointment today.

The World Tourism Organization, in which 153 member states are represented, has been an agency of the United Nations since 2003. Its headquarters are located in Madrid.

Archbishop Monteiro de Castro, 69, is a native of St. Eufemia, Portugal. He was ordained a priest in 1961 for the Diocese of Braga.

As a priest, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1967. He was ordained an archbishop in 1985, and served as apostolic nuncio in the Caribbean, Central America and Africa.

He has been the apostolic nuncio in Spain since 2000.
