The One of Us Initiative has announced that they have reached over a million signatures for their campaign.

According to the petition website, The “One of Us” campaign is a European citizen’s initiative (ECI) that is seeking “juridical protection of the dignity, the right to life and of the integrity of every human being from conception in the areas of EU competence in which such protection is of particular importance.”

The announcement was published in time for the 4th General Assembly of the European Citizen’s Initiative. As of now, the “One of Us” Campaign has collected 1,051,089 signatures. Maroš Šefčovič, the Vice-president of the initiatives congratulated the campaign’s organizers for achieving such a milestone.

“Although the signatures must still be verified, I would like to congratulate the organisers on this great achievement. The fact that two ECIs now appear to have succeeded proves that this important instrument for citizens’ democracy is working as hoped, and sparking genuine pan-European debates on issues that are important to citizens.”

“One of Us, the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) calling on the EU to ban financing of activities which presuppose the destruction of human embryos, has passed the legal threshold for success,” the  organizers of the campaign stated.

The campaign has not only collected more than one million signatures, but have also secured a minimum number of signatures in at least seven Member States, as required by the ECI legislation. So far, signatures have apparently been collected in all 28 Member States, with national thresholds met in 11 Member States. Organisers have vowed to continue collecting signatures until the deadline of November 1st, 2013.
